When we hear of Chitwan, we are immediately reminded of the vast jungles filled with wild animals such as tigers, elephants, and rhinos along with jungle safaris and jungle walks. But little do you know that Chitwan also hides a beautiful secret known as the Chepang Hill Trek that goes through various settlements of the Chepang, indigenous people of Nepal. This trek is a mixture of the unique culture of the Chepang ethnics and of the beautiful landscapes made up of lush green forests, waterfalls, and dramatic hills. A new attraction, Chepang Hill Trek is an easy and short trek for anyone who enjoys humble settings and oneness with nature.
The Chepang Hill Trek starts with a short drive from Kathmandu to Hugdi Bazaar in the Prithvi Highway. The trek takes you to several Chepang settlements like Hattibang, Jyandala, and Shaktikhor exposing you to the Chepang culture, lifestyle, and handicrafts. The Chepang live a semi-nomadic lifestyle and this shift of living in well-built houses has been very recent. The Chepang also follow animism which is the oldest religion in the world; they believe in the spirit of nature and therefore have a deep understanding of their surroundings. They have their own language called the Chyo-Bang and are one of Nepal’s least developed communities. People of Tibeto-Burman origin, they celebrate Nwagi and Chhonam along with the many Hinduism and Buddhism influenced festivals of Nepal. This trek takes you through lush forests with majestic views of Annapurna (8091m) and Dhaulagiri (8167m) if you are blessed with a clear weather. This trek also offers you wonderful sunrise and sunset with the great opportunity for photography. There are also small waterfalls and rivulets along with wild berries which you can nibble on. This region also boasts of a great wildlife, many species of birds and animals can be spotted along the way. This trek is considered easy and is a great way to spend the week unraveling the mysteries related to one of the marginalized communities of Nepal.
