Beyond the seas of prayer flags in the canopy of the northern Himalayas lie the turquoise Gokyo lakes with its crystalline shores and sparkling waters. Surrounded by the majestic Himalayas including some of the world’s largest like Mt. Everest (8,848m), Makalu (8,585m), Cho-Oyu (8,201m), Ama Dablam (6,856m), Thamserku (6,723m) and countless others Gokyo Lakes is the place to be. Combining this with the mesmerizing views and the unmatched thrill of Renjo La Pass, the Gokyo Valley Trek is not the one to be kept on the side.

The journey of a lifetime begins from the trailhead at Phakding reached after experiencing a scenic and thrilling flight to Lukla airstrip. Entering the Sagarmatha National Park brings us face to face with floras and faunas preserved by the Himalayan ecosystem for decades, the journey continues towards Namche Bazaar where we take a day off for rest before once again beginning the journey to Dole. The trail continues to Machhermo before heading towards Gokyo Village located on the eastern shore of Gokyo Tsho. The Gokyo Lake system consists of 5 major lakes beginning with Gokyo Tsho, Thonak Tsho the largest, Longponga Tsho, Taujung Tsho, and Ngozumpa Tsho and is also considered to be the world’s highest freshwater lake system. The summit of Gokyo Ri (5360m) is next which offers a panoramic view of the world’s highest Himalayas. Crossing the Renjo La pass the next day reveling in the mesmerizing views we land at Lungdeng. The Gokyo Valley Trek comes to a close as we gradually make our way down to Lukla stopping at Thame and Jorsalle on the way.

Itinerary

1

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu

Arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), Kathmandu. One of our team representatives will be at the airport to welcome you. You will be directly taken to your hotel in a private van, and you will meet with your guide in the evening. Overnight at a 3-star hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 2: Kathmandu Sightseeing & Preparation for the Trek

After having a delicious breakfast, you will visit world-renowned UNESCO world heritage sites in Kathmandu. You will visit Boudhanath and Swayambhunath, the famous shrines of Lord Buddha); the most famous and holiest Hindu temple, Pashupatinath; and the architectural wonder, Kathmandu Durbar Square. In the evening you will prepare for your trek and make all the necessary gears ready. If needed, you will also do some last minute shopping. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 3: Fly from Kathmandu to Lukla (2828 m. 30 minutes)

You will board the early morning flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. The flight will be short, presenting gorgeous views of hills, rivers, and mountains. After reaching Lukla, you will be served a delicious brunch, and from here, you will begin your trek passing through a beautiful settlement that will join Churi Kharka main trail. Further, you will head to the bank of Dudh Koshi River and head north to the airstrip to Chheplung and cross suspension bridge on the crystal clear Thado Koshi River. En route, you will witness Kusum Kanguru (6367m), which is one of the toughest mountains to conquer. You will continue your trail towards Phakding (2610m) and cross a ridge marked with painted Mani stones to enter the village. Overnight in Phakding.

Day 4: Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3440m. 5/6 hours walking)

Today you will begin your trek along the west bank of Dudh Koshi River to the tiny village of Bengkar. You will cross thrilling suspension bridges covered with beautiful Buddhist prayer flags and enter Sagarmatha National Park at Monjo (2840m). You will continue to ascend through dense pine forest and pass the plateau where the Saturday Bazaar is held as you enter Namche Bazaar. Namche is a beautiful Sherpa town serving the first glimpses of the mighty Everest (8848m).

Day 5: Namche Bazaar Acclimatization day

Today you will hike to the beautiful villages of Khunde and Khumjung. You can also visit the famous Khumjung Monastery to have a look at the skull of the mystical creature “Yeti”. If the weather is clear, you will be able to view the stunning vista of Lhotse (8414m), Everest (8848m), Ama Dablam (6856m), and other snowy peaks. Further, you will descend to Khunde and visit Khunde Hilary Hospital and Government Yak Farm. Afterward, you will hike back to Namche Bazaar (3440m) for the overnight stay.

Day 6: Trek from Namche Bazar to Dole (4200m, 6/7 hours walking) and overnight at Lodge.

You will begin your climb out of the valley gradually through rhododendron forests. Today’s trek will be short, and you will pass through several ridges and meadows. You will cross several beautiful settlements and see vendors selling Tibetan handwork throughout the trail. Further, you will move towards Phortse Thanda, and here you will get to visit centuries-old monasteries. From here, you will pass through pine forests and reach Dhole. Overnight in Dhole.

Day 7: Trek from Dole to Machhermo (4470 m, 5/6 hours walking) and overnight at Lodge.

Today after having breakfast, you will begin your climb along the valley. The climate starts to change and the air starts to become thinner. You will walk through juniper forests and lovely summer settlements and grazing land throughout the trail. You will get majestic views of Cho Oyu (8188m) and its neighboring peaks Chamar (7287m) and Chakung (7029m) as you reach Machhermo. Overnight in Machhermo.

Day 8: Trek from Machhermo to Gokyo (4790m, 4/5 hours walking) and overnight at Lodge.

You will begin your trek over the ridge for more outstanding views of the surrounding landscape. You will see Cho Oyu (8188m) standing tall and mighty in front of you, and below, you will have a stunning view of Dudh Koshi gorge. You will go side by side to Phangga and descend to Riverside before you climb up to Ngozumpa Glacier. Ascend a little further to reach the first and then the second Gokyo Lake. Then a steep climb alongside Ngozumpa Glacier takes you to the pristine Dudh Pokhari, third Gokyo Lake, in the foreground of the quaint Gokyo village where you will stay overnight.

Day 9: Hike to Gokyo Ri (5330 m)

Today your hike will begin early in the morning. You will climb up to Gokyo Ri (5360m), a high hill on the north side of Dudh Pokhari. From here, you will have stunning views of Everest (8848m), Cho Oyu (8188m), Lhotse (8414m), Nuptse (7861m), Cholatse (6440m), and the Ngozumpa Glacier. You will further hike to the fourth and fifth lake from where the views are even more majestic. You will descend back to Gokyo and stay overnight.

Day 10: Trek from Gokyo to Renjo La Pass (5360m) – Lungdeng (4600m 7/8 hours walking) and overnight at Lodge

Today you will gradually go uphill over the lush grassy area, and the slope slowly becomes steeper as you enter the glacial route to Renjo La (5360m). The trail is quite strenuous as it goes through frozen paths on a steep and slippery terrain. Reaching the top of Renjo La (5360m), in the west, you will see panoramic views of Cho Oyu (8188m), Rolwaling Himal Range, and small glacial lakes; in the east, you will see Mt. Everest (8848m), Gyachung Kang (7952m), Lhotse (8414m), and Gokyo lakes. Further, you will trek downhill through the lovely meadows towards Lungdeng. Overnight in Lungdeng.

Day 11: Trek from Lungdeng to Thame (3800m) and overnight at Lodge.

Today you will descend to Thame and visit ancient Thame monastery. You will experience spiritual Buddhist practices and also get to know the traditional culture of Sherpas. You will witness traditional villages with slate-roofed Sherpa houses in Thame. You will stay overnight here and have rest to trek downhill the next day.

Day 12: Trek from Thame to Jorsalle and overnight at Lodge

After having a warm breakfast, you will begin your trek through flat route and descend to Samde as you head towards Namche Bazaar. From here, you will steeply descend down to Thamo village where you will visit a monastery called Khari Gompa, which is also home to a few nuns and monks. You will pass many small monasteries before entering Namche Bazaar from where you continue your trek to reach Jorsalle. Overnight in Jorsalle.

Day 13: Trek from Jorsalle to Lukla and overnight at Lodge

After having your warm breakfast, today you will begin your last trek. The trail is moderate and with few uphill climbs. You will then descend to Dudh Koshi River and move easily to Lukla via various identical Sherpa villages with monasteries and colorful Mani walls. You will stay overnight in Lukla.

Day 14: Fly back from Lukla to Kathmandu early in the morning (35 minutes) overnight at selected Hotel.

Today you will fly back to Kathmandu from Lukla Airport with a lot of beautiful memories. You will have an amazing aerial view of hills, rivers, and mountain peaks during the flight. After reaching Kathmandu, you can take the rest, and in the evening there will be a farewell dinner for you. Overnight at a 3-star hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 15: Departure Farewell Friend

You will be driven to Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) for your flight back to your home.
