Pisang Peak Annapurna

Standing at 6093 metres, the spectacular Pisang Peak offers a challenging climb which rewards you with a fantastic sense of achievement and on top of that, amazing views over the Annapurna region, and some of the highest mountains in the world!  With a mix of ridges and fixed rope climbing, its advised that you have some previous mountaineering experience to enjoy this mountain and that you have a good level of fitness.

 

Depending on mountain conditions, the climb can take anything from 8 hours to 12 hours from Upper Base Camp.  The terrain is mixed and exposed in areas and sections involve climbing and traversing really exciting rock faces and fixed ropes.

 

Pisang Peak is a great experience of Himalayan mountain climbing, and you’ll enjoy 2 nights in tented base camps with our friendly and experienced mountain guides who will guide you through the 3 day expedition from the pretty Upper Pisang Village.

 

At Base Camp, you’ll not only wake up to tasty food cooked by our guides, but mountain views that will simply take your breath away!

 

It’s recommended that you have your own equipment, this includes insulated boots, Jumar, abseil device, climbing helmet, crampons, ice axe and alpine harness. Some of these items can be hired, so speak to us to confirm what we can help to provide/loan.

 

One thing is guaranteed, when you reach the summit of Pisang Peak, you really will feel like you are on top of the world!

Itinerary Detail

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu – 1,300m/4,264 ft

Upon your arrival at Kathmandu airport, you will be greeted by a representative from Epic Adventures. After completing your customs formalities (Visa, etc) pick up your luggage and look for our representative with a Epic Adventures display board at the arrival gate. You will be then transferred to your hotel. Included meals:  

 

Day 02: Kathmandu Sightseeing & Preparation for the Trek

Today after breakfast we start a guided tour to several of the most historical and spiritual attractions in Kathmandu.  Some of the landmarks we visit include the World Heritage Sites of Kathmandu Durbar Square, the sacred Hindu temple of Pashupati Nath, the famous ‘Monkey Temple’ (Swayambhu Nath) and Buddhists shrine (Bouddha Nath).  In the afternoon, there will be a pre-trip discussion where we can meet our trek leader and other team members.  You can also do your last minute buying of personal items as you will be being your trip tomorrow. Day 03: Kathmandu- Besisahar, 800m/2624ft. & Trek to Khudi Altitude: 830m/2,723ft Distance of walking: 6-7 hrs walks

Drive to Besisahar via local highway, it is approx of 220 Kms, takes about 6 hours to reach this mountain town, from where our real adventure to Annapurna begins!  We will walk for around 2 hours via local villages, riverside and green lands to Khudi. Overnight at Khudi. Khudi offers the first glimpse of gorgeous Manaslu mountain range. Included meals:BLD  

 

Day 04: Khudi- Ghermu Altitude: 1330m/4,363 ft Distance of walking: 5-6 hrs walks Today after breakfast, we will continue walking along the riverside with several suspension bridge crossings, today is an opportunity to explore the farming lands and enjoy with several waterfalls en route.  The walk leads us to the big hill of Bahundanda, the first ascent, then walking becomes easier as we will mostly trek down to the village of Ghermu where will will stay overnight.  You may explore hydro-electricity power station and the waterfalls as an evening excursion. Day 05: Ghermu- Taal Altitude: 1675m/5494ft Distance of walking: 6-7 hrs walks

We cross the Marshyangdi River to Syange then continue our walk onwards via sub-tropical forest until we reach Chanje where we will have lunch break.  After here, we gradually walk down to the river again, cross a small wooden bridge then we continue walking onward to the opposite hill.  The final trail leads up to Taal, this is around 1 hour of hiking and is quite demanding.   Overnight at Taal. Day 06: Taal- Chame Altitude: 2670m/8757ft Distance of walking: 6-7 hrs walks Walking again along with the Myarshyangdi River for 2 hours brings you to the village called Dharapani, from which the trekking route to Manaslu comes to meet at Annapurna trail.  Another half an hour of walking brings you to your lunch place at Danaque.  From here, we have two ways to walk to Chame; Approx of 3 to 4 hours. We suggest the upper way, it involves an hour uphill but the views from here are just amazing, the views of Annapurna is just unbelievable as its at eye level.  You can also follow the downwards trail, not much mountain views but the walk is along the riverside and in the pine forest. Day 07: Chame – Pisang Altitude: 3,300m/10824ft Distance of walking: 5-6 hrs walks Today we are heading to Pisang, for the first half an hour, the walk is easy and in local areas, after Bhratang, walking involves a steep and narrow path through a very dense forest, bringing us to the dramatic curved rock face, rising 1500m from the river.  Upon on reaching the hill top, the wide river valley starts.  From here, we see the entire view of the Annapurna Range.  Pisang is a really interesting village by the riverside.  In the evening you can take a half an hour walk to Upper Mustang if you wish. Day 08: Pisang to Upper Pisang (3,810 m/12,497ft) 1-2 hrs Altitude: 3,810/ 12497ft Distance of walking: 1 hrs

Today day we take a small hike up to Upper Pisang, takes only approx an hour and remaining time we have you can explore the monastery and acclimatise.  This is where you will meet our climbing guide and he will check your climbing equipment. Overnight at Upper Pisang. Included meals:BLD  

 

Day 09: Upper Pisang to Base Camp Altitude: 4380m/14360ft Distance of walking: 3-4 hrs walks

Today, we prepare to hike up to Pisang Peak Base Camp. From Upper Pisang village, the path ascends through sparse woods and pastures to Kharka at (4,380m) which is considered as the best place for setting up the base camp for overnight.  It is in a flat alpine section along the well worn trail.  We fix our camp site here. Day 10: Pisang Base Camp to Pisang High Camp Altitude: 5400m/17712ft Distance of walking: 4-5 hrs walks

We climb towards the shoulder on the south west ridge of Pisang Peak for 3 to 4 hours to reach high camp where we will set up our overnight camp at the altitude of 5400m.  It is likely to have snow at high camp from end of Nov till end March.  We will re-check our climbing gear and do the final preparation for Pisang Summit for the following day. Day 11: Pisang Peak Summit and Hike back to Upper Pisang Summit of Pisang peak- 6091/19980ft Distance of walking: 8-9 hrs walks

Today is a day to fulfill your dream of reaching Pisang Peak summit. From the High Camp, the well defined ridge leads to the final snow slope which is steep and technical, to reach the summit. Our climbing guide will fix the rope and lead you to the successful summit of the Pisang Peak. After a successful summit we will return back to Base Camp at Upper Pisang for overnight. Day 12: Climbing Reserve Day We use this as a reserve day in case if the weather gets bad or if any participant needs more time to prepare.  It is essential to have this day as it is quite risky to try to summit to Pisang Peak if weather is not favoring us. Included meals:BLD  

 

Day 13: Upper Pisang to Manang (3,500m/11,482ft) 4-5 hrs Altitude: 3500m/11482ft Distance of walking: 5-6 hrs walks

The route to Managa is now through the Upper Pisang via Geru, the scenery is outstanding.  It feels like we are horizontal with majestic peaks.  The panoramic views of the mountain peaks, such as Annapurna, Pisang Peak, and several others will definitely allure us.  We notice the contrast in the landscape and vegetation from today.  The cold, dry climate creates a much harsher environment. We will retrace our steps back to Braga village for lunch, and take a short break to look at the Barge monastery, the largest Buddhist monastery of Manang village.  Another half an hour brings us to the Manang where we stay overnight. Day 14: Manang: Rest & Acclimatize Altitude: 3,500m/11,482ft Acclimatization Day

After a week of walking, you will welcome a day to relax at Manang.  Today is mainly to acclimatize, we have some recommended hikes for today.  Walk to Gangapurna Glacier Lake, and takes an hour uphill to the tea stop at lap of Gangapurna, you will have a great view overlooking Manang, and its surrounding villages.  You could also walk up above Manang to the cliff where there is 100 rupees BABA, who blesses you.  There is a cliff gumpa here, and views of entire Annapurna’s and Tilicho. Day 15 & Day 16: Trip to Tilicho Lake via Khansar & Tilicho Base Camp Altitude: At Tilcho lake 5180m, Khansar 3735m and Tilcho Base Camp 4150m

These two days, we will have a short but impressive trip to Tilicho Lake, the highest altitude lake in the world. From Manang, it required of 5 to 7 hours of walking to reach Tilicho Base Camp hotel at 4150m where we will stay for the night.  If hotel at Tilicho Base camp is closed then we have to overnight stay at Khansar (3735m) and do the long hike next day to reach Tilicho day trip and return.  The hike from Manang to Tilicho Base Camp is approx 6 to 8 hours.  Then from here, it is approx 3 hours to Tilicho Lake (Approx of 5180m); enjoy its wonderful lake surroundings and the great panorama of Tilicho Peak.  Then return back to Khangsar and over night. Day 17: Khansar – Yak Kharka Altitude: 4,110m/13,484ft Distance of walking: 3-4 hrs walks

Today we will hike down to the river valley and after crossing the valley its a short hike up, we will catch up with the regular trail to Thorong-la and then continue through meadows where horses and yaks graze to reach Yak Kharka. Overnight at Yak Kharka. Included meals:BLD  

 

Day 18: Yak Kharka – Thorong Phedi Altitude: 4,450m/14596ft Distance of walking: 3-4 hrs walks

Today, we are walking at the foot of the world highest pass, Thorong-la Phedi, it is a small busy settlement catering to the needs of trekkers who stay overnight here before heading to the pass.  It is like a base camp before heading to the pass of 5416m.  Peoples who are fit and want to shorten the hike of the next day, they can hike up to high camp for another hour and half for overnight.  However, we recommend an overnight stay at Thorong Phedi. Day 19: Thorong Phedi – Thorong- La Top- Muktinath Altitude: 3,800/12,467ft & Thorong-La 5,416m/17,765ft Distance of walking: 7-8 hrs walks

The Ultimate destination of our Annapurna Circuit Trek! Cross to Thorong-la, 5416m- the highest passes of the world.  Early start is essential so we start our walking in the morning at 4 to 4.30am depending on seasons and weather conditions.  It takes about 4 to 5 hours to attempt the top, the initial first hour is pretty tough as it is straight uphill to high camp, then gradual walk onward, however, each minute is hard and memorable.  Altitude can be a problem, so slow and continuous walking is required. Reaching top is an achievement.  The dramatic views of mountains are just amazing.  Enjoy your time here then prepare for the long descend all the way down to Muktinath at altitude of 3800m, you will be glad to be back to this altitude.  Muktinath is an important pilgrimage place for both Hindus and Buddhist.  The area hosts a Vishnu temple and a Monastery nearby.  Muktinath itself demonstrates the religions harmony in Nepal. Day 20: Muktinath-Marpha Altitude: 2,670m/8,760ft Distance of walking: 6-7 hrs walks After breakfast this morning we start walking down crossing deserted hills, it takes around 2 hours to reach Kali Gandaki River Valley then we walk through the river valley.  We cross Jomsom- the head quarter of Mustang.  Another hour of walking on the sand bar in the afternoon brings us to Marpha for overnight stay.  Marpha village is a symbolic village of Mustang, all houses are attached to each other. Day 21: Marpha- Ghasa Altitude: 2,120m/6,955ft Distance of walking: 6-7 hrs walks Walking till to Kalopani is along the wide river valley and sand bars, we have to cross Kali Gandaki river several times so several suspension bridges are involved! After Kalopani, the vegetation changes; we are again in the green low valleys. Walking to Ghasa is through sub tropical pine forests and into the narrow mountain valley.  Ghasa is a interesting place as it lies between two big hills, and is a settlement of the Thakali people. Day 22: Ghasa- Tatopani Altitude: 1,200m/3937ft Distance of walking: 4-5 hrs walks

Pretty walk day today, descending all the way to the Ruptse to Dana.  We cross the deepest valley in the world, busy settlement of local peoples, mixed ethnic peoples and cultures.  Tatopani is a great low land mountain village.  This evening, we will visit the hot spring which is situated at river bank of Kali Gandaki River.  You can enjoy this natural hot bath in the afternoon, before returning to your hotel.  Included meals:BLD  

 

Day 23: Tatopani- Ghorepani Altitude: 2,850m/9,350ft Distance of walking: 5-6 hrs walks Today after walking the easy riverside trail for 30 min, be prepared to walk an hour uphill. While we walk, we observe the lifestyle of the people in the midland villages of Central Annapurna.  Ghara and Sikha are the villages with terraced and inclined farmlands. We gradually walk the steep trail to Ghorepani.  Passing through the Phalate and Chitre, we walking through a un-habitated area through rhododendron, magnolia and meadows.  Ghorepani is the top of the hill; it has a amazing panorama of entire Annapurna range and interesting blue roof tops of local houses village.  Richest cultural and traditions of Poon who are the permanent inhabitant of this hill is one of the remarking things to see. Day 24: Morning, Hike to Poon Hill (3210m/10,528ft), Trek to Tadapani Altitude: 2,710m/8,891ft Distance of walking: 4-5 hrs walks

We start our hike up to Poon Hill, one of the panoramic view point of this Annapurna.  The route offers a glimpse of aurora walking through the pleasant rhododendron forests.  Pun Hill named after the hill tribe Pun, inhabitants of Ghorepani/Shikha village.  This is wide range of panoramic scenery from the far western Himalaya of Dolpo, Mt. Dhaulagiri, and Annapurna including Mt. Machhapuchre (Fish Tail) and all the way to Manasalu Himalayan range.  Its picturesque Himalayan scenery is a perfect photo opportunity.  We then return back to Ghorepani for breakfast and continue to trek to our onward destination, the walk passes through the rhododendron, pine and fir forest with ups and downs, finally you will reach Tadapani for overnight at local teahouse.  This is a great place surrounded by rhododendron forests with views of Mt. Fish Tail. Included meals:BLD  

 

Day 25: Tadapani to Ghandruk Altitude: 1,990m/6,529ft Distance of walking: 5-6 hrs walks

Enjoy with sunrise views of Mt. Annapurna south, Himchuli & Fishtail while having breakfast- these three mountains are very closed from Tadapani.  Todays walk is a pleasant one, through the dense rhododendron hill. It is all downtill to Ghandruk.  Ghandruk is one of the biggest local villages of this area; it is an impressive Gurung village.  You can explore with your remaining time, maybe the Gurung museum or local hillside. Day 26: Ghorepani- Nayapul & drive back to Pokhara Altitude: 820m/2700ft Distance of walking: 4-5 hrs walks Distance of Drive: 1 hrs drive

Descend all the way to Modi River then the walk is pleasant most of the way following the River side till to Birethanthi and back to Nayapul.  Our trek ends here and we will drive back to Pokhara lakeside for an overnight stop.  Remaining time is yours to explore the surrounding lake side area and relax.  Included meals:BLD

 

Day 27: Pokhara- Kathmandu Distance of driving: 5-6 hrs drive

After breakfast, we drive to back to Kathmandu by tourist bus and transfer to your hotel in Kathmandu. This evening we meet again, to celebrate the successful completion of our journey, there will be dinner and Cultural show hosted by Epic Adventures . Included meals:BLD  

 

Day 28: Farewell Friend

We are saying good bye to the mountains as your journey in Nepal comes to an end today!  There is nothing to do but trade emails with travel companions and organise the photos.  If you have more time you can do some shopping or sightseeing.  Approximately 3 hours before the scheduled flight a representative from Epic Adventures will take you to the airport.  On your way home you’ll have plenty of time to plan your next adventure in the wonderful country of Nepal.
